Figen Karaca

Personal

I was born and raised in Muğla, a lovely coastal city in Türkiye. I have lived in different cities and countries and have been living in Nijmegen, the Netherlands since 2019. I love thinking about problems and enjoy solving them (good reason to be a researcher!). I appreciate multiculturalism and advocate for equality. I am also a passionate educator, always trying to be a better one. You can find me in my office unless it is sunny outside. Otherwise, I will most certainly be working out in the sun.

Academic

I am a fourth year PhD candidate in Centre for Language Studies, Radboud University and International Max Planck Research School for Language Sciences.

In my research, I mainly study how monolingual and (early) bilingual children and adults understand and produce language.

My PhD project focuses on investigating what makes early bilingual children and adults better predictors in online language comprehension. Using eye-tracking in visual world paradigm, I focus specially on the role of language experience and proficiency in predictive language processing under the supervision of Dr. Susanne Brouwer, Dr. Sharon Unsworth, and Professor Falk Huettig.

I was also previously involved in a project examining the linguistic skills of bilingual childen with developmental language disorder with Professor Elma Blom (Utrecht University) and Professor Aylin Küntay (Koç University) as well as another project investigating morphological processing in English by L1 and L2 speakers with Kaidi Loo, Abigail Toth, and Juhani Jarvikivi.
